En 1832, William Ticknor y John Allen compraron un negocio de venta de libros en Boston y comenzaron a involucrarse en la publicación; James T. Fields se unió como socio en 1843. Fields y Ticknor reunieron gradualmente una impresionante lista de escritores, incluidos Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne y Henry David Thoreau. El dúo formó una estrecha relación con Riverside Press, una imprenta de Boston propiedad de Henry Oscar Houghton.
